Texas insurance glossary

TxDPS

TxDPS is the Texas Department of Public Safety, the agency that issues driver licenses, records suspensions, and receives SR-22 filings from carriers.

Sources checked

It is established under Texas Government Code ch. 411. For an insurance reader its relevance is narrow and complete: it holds the driver record, it decides when a license is eligible again, and it receives every SR-22 and SR-26 a Texas carrier transmits.

It does not sell insurance, approve premiums or regulate carriers. That is the Texas Department of Insurance, and confusing the two sends people to the wrong agency with the wrong question.

A driver’s own record is shown by the DPS License Eligibility system rather than by any agency, including this one.

Where this is handled

A definition does not file anything. When the suspension date is closer than the research, one independent agency on FM 1959 can transmit the SR-22 to the DPS and tell you what the state wants before you pay anyone anything.
