Medical payments

Medical payments coverage pays medical and funeral expenses for the insured and their passengers after a crash, regardless of who was at fault, up to a stated limit.

Sources checked

It is the narrower of the two fault-free auto coverages Texas sells. Personal injury protection pays medical costs and a share of lost income; medical payments pays medical costs alone.

It is usually bought in small limits and pays alongside health insurance rather than instead of it, which makes it most useful against deductibles and co-pays in the first weeks after a crash.

Which of the two is actually on a policy is answered by the declarations page, not by the agent’s memory or the household’s.

Where this is handled

Knowing what a coverage is called is not the same as knowing what is on your policy. One independent agency can read your declarations page with you and compare the markets that will write your record.
