Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance is optional coverage that pays for towing and on-the-spot help — a jump start, a tyre change, a lockout — when a vehicle will not go.

Sources checked

It is a service benefit rather than a damage coverage: it pays to get the vehicle moving or moved, and it does not repair anything. Towing distance and the number of call-outs per term are the two limits worth reading.

Whether using it counts against you is the common question, and the answer is that it varies by insurer. It is not a liability claim and it involves no fault, but repeated call-outs are visible.

Motor club membership does the same job outside the policy. Buying both is common and usually pointless.

Where this is handled

Knowing what a coverage is called is not the same as knowing what is on your policy. One independent agency can read your declarations page with you and compare the markets that will write your record.
