County mutual
A county mutual is a Texas-only class of insurance company, and it is the form most non-standard and SR-22 auto policies in this state are actually written through.
It is a company structure rather than a product, and it is peculiar to Texas. County mutuals were historically regulated more lightly on policy forms and rates, which is why they became the vehicle for writing drivers the standard market declines.
If you have ever bought a policy from a familiar brand and found an unfamiliar company name on the declarations page, a county mutual is often the reason.
It changes nothing about whether a claim gets paid. It is regulated by TDI, it files the same SR-22 certificates, and the policy is a policy.

Where this is handled
Knowing what a coverage is called is not the same as knowing what is on your policy. One independent agency can read your declarations page with you and compare the markets that will write your record.
